Staying True To Myself: A Poem.

I yawned through
a monstrous cup of coffee, then wandered inside my mind.

Undressing those thoughts that appeared warm, and didn't fret when others seemed unkind.

I scattered the pages of ideas I'd saved, and studied them very well.

And after I knitted them all together - I looked to see what I could sell.

I knew, if the bell of my soul rang even once, I'd consider maybe it was a wise man calling.

Or I'd reckon maybe it was a fool; hoping to fritter away the good thoughts I'd been hauling.

When I listen closely to wise voices - they water my thirst to understand more.

But I'm aware of the drummers who look to change the rhythm in hearts, and lock a rational mind's door.

They are everywhere. They are, in a sense, what I never wish to be.

Too many folk are thrilled to murder others blind, but happily there are those few who provide vision because they care to see...

...and to them I am most thankful.

Thanks to all of you who had such kind words for me.

Years ago I tried my hand at poetry, but could never quite "get it." When reading the works of others it always looked easy to me, but when I tried to apply my thoughts on paper I realized the difficulty of such endeavors. Whenever I read my poetry back to myself it seemed juvenile. Maybe I've finally come to understand the nature of poetry a little better. Maybe I'll try it again! :)

I play guitar and write songs, but it is a bit different.  All you need is a good "hook" or catch phrase in song-writing and you'll get peoples attention.  Poetry, I find, needs  constant rhythm and flow to keep others awake to the message.  Poetry, for sure, is a challenge.
