Talking Politics

Over the years I have noticed a common occurrence that seems to be more the rule than exception. I have encountered people who seem to be of the opinion that political talk DOES NOT belong in Cafe's, tavern's, bars, lounges, etc, and I could not disagree more. I feel strongly that such public places should be exactly where important issues should be discussed.

I was talking to a soldier recently and asked him of his political views on war, the economy, occupy Wall street, and such, when ignorantly, his father-in-law stepped in and interjected that politics and religion are not proper talk for a bar. I told the man that I didn't need him to tell me what was proper or not, and reminded him that his son-in-law was fighting for our liberty so we could have any discussion we choose to have. He didn't like what I had to say, and I could have cared less.

What I find preposterous are those who are so eager and quick to display their so called love of democracy, yet when I use my amended right of free speech, these same individuals wish me to stay quiet because THEY'RE incapable of an intelligent verbal exchange without all the emotions they exhibit when their beliefs and views are challenged. For them it's impossible to debate political topics without getting upset, so to save themselves from their anger and childishness they wish to silence the rest of us who have grown beyond such behavior.

I had another man say to me last night that “religion and politics don't belong in a bar.” I replied, “First of all, religion doesn't belong anywhere. Religion is made up of fictitious characters and isn't real. Since politics are about real human beings who have an impact on our lives and future, it DOES indeed belong in public conversation. We all should be discussing it daily, anytime, anywhere!”

What possesses these people to play dictators and tell me what is allowed from my mouth when all I wish to do is talk, teach, and learn? To them, democracy only exist when a person has things to say that's in agreement with what they wish to hear. Because THEY can't talk rationally and unemotionally – the rest of us have to keep our mouths shut!
