Tim Thomas' greatest breakaway save. A White House protest.

Being a Boston sports fan all my life, I, like most New England area fans, have experienced the highs and lows of our team's victories and disappointments over the years. In the sixties and seventies I witnessed the likes of a revolutionary player named Bobby Orr, who led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 1969 and 1972, change the game of hockey. I watched a basketball legend named Larry Bird, one of the five greatest players in NBA history, lead the Celtics to three Championships in the 1980's. As for professional football, I have beheld the brilliant quarterbacking skills of Tom Brady and watched him win three Super Bowls. And in 2004 the Boston Red Sox completed the greatest comeback in sports history in winning their first world title in eighty-six years.

Wow! How lucky I am to have seen such great sports moments by my home teams. From Adam Viniteri's last second field goal against the St.Louis Rams in the 2001 Super Bowl, to Curt Shillings solid pitching performance against the Yankees in game six of the 2004 ALCS while nursing a bloody sutured right foot.

But maybe the greatest moment any New England athlete has ever experienced came yesterday (Jan. 23rd, 2012) , and it had nothing to do with sports but more to do with principle, when Bruin MVP goaltender Tim Thomas refused a trip to the White House to visit the President because he believes that, "the government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.”

It wasn't about “politics or party affiliation,” Thomas stated and then added, “I exercised my right as a free citizen. In my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL. This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”

Horray for Tim Thomas! Of all the great moments a multimillionaire, star, Olympian, and champion can experience, I don't think I could ever have more respect for those achievements than his protest against the government's constitutional abuses.

With the TSA groping us unconstitutionally at every airport, and soon to be highways and malls, it is imperative for those in a position of recognition to voice their concerns. Because of the current police state we are in, it is crucial for all those who are considered hero's of American sports, music, and screen and who trust in our constitution, to object to the government's perversion against it's amendments. It's a must that television personalities oppose the Wall Street political corruption, for it is their voices that could make a greater difference. Tim Thomas did just that, and it was, in my opinion, the greatest breakaway save he has ever made.
